xCoAx 2026 – 14th International Conference on Computation, Communication, Aesthetics and X

xCoAx explores the intersections where computational tools and media meet art and culture in the form of multi-disciplinary enquiries on aesthetics, computation, communication and the elusive X factor that connects and affects them all.

xCoAx is a great chance for international audiences to exchange ideas in search of interdisciplinary synergies between artists, media practitioners, computer scientists, and theoreticians at the thresholds between digital arts and culture.

xCoAx 2026 will take place at the Palazzo Madama museum in Torino, Italy, under the auspices of the Department of Philosophy and Education Sciences of the University of Torino.

Realiza-se no dia 5 de junho, às 14h00, na sala 4.06, o workshop Memes gerados por IA e cultura visual: remix, sobrevivência das imagens e agência criativa, aberto à comunidade académica, a dinamizar por Felipe Aristimuño, investigador júnior da FBAUL, no âmbito da UC Arte, Educação e Novas Tecnologias

Este workshop propõe refletir sobre os memes gerados por IA a partir da cultura visual, considerando os modos como imagens, narrativas e discursos circulam, reaparecem e são recombinados em ambientes digitais. Partimos da identificação de uma continuidade simbólica entre a cultura do remix e os atuais modelos generativos, observando como práticas de apropriação, repetição e deslocação presentes na música, no hip-hop, no graffiti, no stencil e nos memes digitais encontram novos desdobramentos nas imagens produzidas por IA.

A reflexão será articulada com a leitura de Georges Didi-Huberman sobre a sobrevivência das imagens em Aby Warburg, sobretudo para pensar como determinadas formas visuais regressam em novos contextos, transportando memórias, conflitos, imaginários históricos e modos de representação que não se organizam de forma linear. A partir de exemplos contemporâneos, como influenciadores artificiais que “viajam” por diferentes épocas históricas, personagens políticas geradas por IA e remixes audiovisuais da cultura popular, discutiremos as implicações culturais, educativas e éticas destes conteúdos.

O workshop terá uma primeira parte dedicada à apresentação e debate dos conceitos de cultura visual, remix, imagem sobrevivente, IA generativa e agência criativa. Na segunda parte, os estudantes trabalharão em equipas na construção de mapas de ideias, relacionando exemplos de memes gerados por IA com questões de representação, autoria, memória visual, discurso político, educação histórica e empoderamento mediático. A atividade pretende estimular uma leitura crítica e expressiva das tecnologias generativas, interrogando o que podemos criar com IA, que narrativas são produzidas por estas imagens e como podemos atuar como consumidores e criadores de conteúdos de media.

Inaugura na Galeria da Faculdade de Belas-Artes, no dia 10 de janeiro, às 17h00, a exposição do realizador e pesquisador Lucas Camargo de Barros, intitulada Patologias fílmicas e outras dissidências. A mostra propõe uma imersão nos processos criativos que atravessam a escrita, a montagem e a realização do longa-metragem O Tubérculo (70 min, Super8mm, 2024), filme correalizado com Zetune.

Com curadoria de Cátia Rodrigues e organização de Fabián Cevallos Vivar, a exposição parte de novas imagiologias para expandir o trabalho cinematográfico para o espaço expositivo, dando corpo material às imagens, aos afetos e às fraturas narrativas do filme. A tridimensionalidade desses gestos amplia a noção de coming back home, eixo central de O Tubérculo, transformando a experiência fílmica em um campo sensorial, crítico e político.

Rodado integralmente em Super8mm, na cidade natal do artista, O Tubérculo se constrói como um caso clínico ficcional, narrando o retorno de G. após a morte de sua avó, vítima de uma misteriosa doença chamada Insônia Familiar Fatal. Entre biografia, delírio e fabulação, o filme articula temporalidades dissociativas e contamina o próprio corpo da imagem, instaurando um cinema onde a doença não é apenas tema, mas força formal dissidente.

A exposição dialoga diretamente com a investigação teórico-prática desenvolvida por Barros em sua tese no programa de Artes Performáticas e Imagem em Movimento, orientado por Prof. Rogério Taveira e co-orientado pela Profª Marta Mendes. No trabalho, analisa as representações da doença no cinema contemporâneo como estratégia de dissidência formal ao propor o conceito de patologia fílmica: um modo de leitura e criação em que o filme incorpora sintomas, disfunções e instabilidades, deslocando as formas hegemônicas de narrativa, imagem e fruição.

Entre cinema expandido, pensamento crítico e fabulação estética, Patologias fílmicas e outras dissidências convida o público a atravessar um território instável onde corpo, imagem, diagnóstico e invenção se fundem. E onde a doença emerge como força poética, política e dissidente do próprio cinema.

A 17ª edição do InShadow – Lisbon Screendance Festival percorre Lisboa com competições de vídeo-dança, documentário e animação, e inclui também performances, exposições, masterclasses e workshops.

Na FBAUL, o InShadow ocupa a cisterna com uma instalação de vídeo-dança de vários artistas, e a galeria com uma exposição de fotografia e vídeo da artista Andrea Hackl. Com inauguração a 3 de Dezembro, às 18h30, estas exposições podem ser visitadas até dia 19 de Dezembro.

No âmbito do InShadow Lisbon Screendance Festival inaugura no dia 3 de dezembro, às 18h30, na Cisterna da Faculdade de Belas-Artes uma exposição de vídeo-dança. A exposição ficará patente até 19 de dezembro.

Captação de uma dança fluída de dissolução e transformação e celebração da leveza e graciosidade.

Inaugura no dia 3 de dezembro, às 18h30, na Galeria da Faculdade de Belas-Artes a exposição de fotografia e vídeo When the Wind Sang to us and the Sea Whispered to the Moon de Andrea  Hackl, no âmbito do Festival InShadow. A exposição ficará patente até 19 de dezembro.

​​No âmbito da sua exposição para o InShadow, Andrea Hackl apresenta um novo trabalho em vídeo e uma seleção de fotografias de três séries que dialogam entre si – sombra e luz, água e ar – formando a sua própria dança. As séries GRACE, BLACK & MOON LIGHT nasceram de encontros com os fotógrafos Maike Helbig (Grace, Black) e Duarte Netto (Moon Light).​​​

A presença de Andrea Hackl no InShadow é apoiada financeiramente pelo Fonds Podiumskunsten Netherlands.

Andrea Hackl é uma realizadora independente, artista multidisciplinar e coreógrafa sediada em Amesterdão, e trabalha com filme, cinema e performance. O corpo tem uma presença importante no seu trabalho e a sua formação em dança e prática baseada no movimento moldou definitivamente a forma como percebe e trabalha com o mundo à sua volta — e conferiu uma sensibilidade e qualidade especiais ao seu trabalho cinematográfico —, mas valoriza a alquimia de diferentes disciplinas, e a sua prática funde cinema com performance, com o objetivo de criar projetos poéticos e visualmente atraentes que exploram temas como liberdade, empoderamento, conexão humana e a interação entre paisagens internas e externas.

All organisms create internal models of their surroundings as they interact with the world. To ensure their survival, individual species connect to an underlying reality in radically different ways. Sensing their environments through their own particular sensoria, each organism experiences a self-centred world that is intrinsically subjective. At the same time, it’s equally true that, at a fundamental level, the unit of survival is neither the individual, nor the group, nor even species, but rather ‘organism plus environment’ (Bateson). Life can therefore be understood as a vast interconnected web where multiple worlds overlap.

At a time when AI is gaining increasing cultural weight, this workshop starts from the premise that human intelligence is part of larger ecological system and should not be separated from it. Network theory will be explored as a tool to conjoin the human and non-human, alongside an unorthodox, performative logic that demonstrates how binary oppositions are neither inherent nor fixed. Participants will devise novel approaches for their individual studio practice. Includes practical and theoretical modules.

About CADA: CADA is an art group that uses new media to activate a space for experience. Its work is playful and often inspired by what in everyday life and in nonhuman environments can be inferred through patterns and what might otherwise be uncomputable. The group’s approach is collaborative and experimental. It also organises Human Entities, an annual programme of public talks focused on technological change and its impacts, runs workshops to examine narratives of computation and the ANIMAIS residency to extend participation in media-based art.

Formed in Lisbon in 2007 by Sofia Oliveira and Jared Hawkey, CADA has exhibited across Europe and in Brazil. CADA has received public funding from the Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes) of the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and Lisbon City Council.

Susana de Sousa Dias, Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, is the Guest of Honor at IDFA 2025, the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival, which takes place from November 13th to 23rd. IDFA is considered the largest and most prestigious international documentary film festival.

In recent editions, this distinction has been awarded to artists and filmmakers Hito Steyerl, Johan Grimonprez, Laura Poitras, and Wang Bing, and in previous years, to filmmakers such as Agnès Varda and Werner Herzog.

IDFA presents several films by Susana de Soua Dias, acclaimed filmmaker, curator, and academic. Known for her singular approach to archival images and cinematic form, her work interrogates dictatorship, colonial legacies, and the fragile terrain of memory.

Hybrid Fragments ++

The exhibition Hybrid Fragments++ builds on and continues the previous exhibition Hybrid Fragments, which emerged from hybrid materiality practices and artistic processes developed within CAPHE project – Communities and Artistic Participation in Hybrid Environment – and which have been extrapolated to adjacent scenarios. It seeks to explore the speculative potential of the fragment as an operative concept in the arts and as a resource for training in artistic research in higher education. Based on the idea that a portion of something can be reborn and recreate any other ‘thing,’ the exhibition proposes experimental situations that articulate different material bodies in the continuum of reality-virtuality. This process aims to promote dialogue between subjects and materials, which can also be subjects. The resulting experiences pave the way for new approaches in arts education, especially about artistic research and its potential for knowledge transfer.

Inspired by the notion of tesserae in literary criticism (Bloom, 1973) and the concept of constellation as a dynamic creative process (Elias, 2019) that recovers the complexity, meaning and autonomy of the fragment (Perienes 2010), Hybrid Fragments expands the concept of ‘nomadic fragment’ proposed by Elias, Mendes, Ângelo and Lucas (2024). Through a selection of images and objects by various artists, the exhibition presents fragments that sometimes manifest themselves as documents, sometimes reconfiguring themselves as surviving images (Didi-Huberman), emerging in new materialities and digital environments that maintain the latency of their previous appearances. In these compositions, the works embody different temporalities and material stages, collapsing visual planes that evoke both Bennet’s vibrant matter, Haraway’s situated knowledge, and Braidotti’s nomadic subject. 

In a progression of textures, spaces and hybrid materializations, the exhibition is an invitation to immersion through multisensory experiences, from the technologies of sculpture, drawing, photography and design to fragments from multiple sources to content in Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and 3D digital printing. 

In particular, the exhibition shows the artistic research and arts education work carried out by FBAUL art teachers and students in collaboration with other members and students of the CAPHE project within the scope of the proposed activities, including documentary content produced during the mobility programs.
