A special film screening of I Am Martin Parr, a documentary dedicated to one of the most recognisable and influential figures in contemporary street photography.

With privileged access to Martin Parr’s world, the film follows the British photographer and revisits his career, his distinctive perspective on society, and the way he has transformed everyday life, consumer culture and the peculiarities of modern life into an instantly recognisable visual language.

Following the screening, photographer and director Lee Shulman will present the process behind the making of the documentary and share stories and reflections on the experience of filming and working with Martin Parr.

O evento Dispositivo de Práticas Intermediais (ou Práticas Intermediais em Conexão) reúne um conjunto de investigadores cujas práticas se situam no cruzamento entre design, performance/música e cinema, entendendo a criação artística como espaço de produção de conhecimento e a intermedialidade como estratégia operativa de articulação entre meios, linguagens e metodologias.

Os contributos apresentados partilham uma atenção aos processos criativos, à investigação artística e às práticas performativas, explorando relações entre corpo, imagem, som, tecnologia, narrativa, memória e educação. A intermedialidade surge aqui não apenas como resultado estético, mas como princípio metodológico: uma forma de pensar e produzir através da tradução entre sistemas expressivos distintos — do popular ao académico, do analógico ao digital, do efémero ao documentado, do sensível ao conceptual.

Neste contexto, as palavras-chave escolhidas pelos investigadores — tais como cinema, música, práticas educativas, criação artística, processos criativos, transdisciplinaridade, investigação artística, intermedialidade e design gráfico e editorial — configuram um campo de afinidades que evidencia a pluralidade das práticas contemporâneas e a sua inscrição crítica nos contextos sociais, culturais e tecnológicos do presente.

O evento propõe-se como um dispositivo de apresentação e reflexão sobre obras, processos e investigações em curso, sem impor uma unidade temática rígida, mas antes construindo um espaço de convergência entre experiências singulares. Através da partilha de materiais digitais, excertos, registos e reflexões, procura-se tornar visível a diversidade de abordagens e, simultaneamente, sublinhar os pontos de contacto entre práticas visuais, sonoras e performativas.

Este dispositivo coletivo assume, assim, a criação como território comum, a intermediação como linguagem transversal e a reflexão como gesto crítico, configurando um espaço onde investigação, arte e educação se encontram e se interrogam mutuamente.

Pere Portabella’s Clandestine Cinema in Late Francoism
Seminar with Pablo La Parra Pérez (Filmoteca de Catalunya | Acció Portabella)

This seminar delves into the radical projects that Catalan filmmaker Pere Portabella made clandestinely during the final years of Franco’s regime. Portabella produced titles that challenged the limits of state censorship—most notably Luis Buñuel’s Viridiana (1961)—and experienced, as a filmmaker, the regime’s cultural and political repression.  Afterwards, Portabella turned to clandestinity in the late 1960s, working outside the frameworks of legality and the film industry.  

In these years, wherein the filmmaker moved between underground filmmaking and active participation in the anti-Franco opposition, Portabella left behind a corpus of films that defy categorization: in which fierce criticism of the regime coexists with exquisite formal experimentation around the expressive and political possibilities of cinema. Combining film screenings, documents from the filmmaker’s archive recently entrusted to the Filmoteca de Catalunya, and critical dialogues with other sources, some of the topics to be addressed in the seminar include: the dialectics between avant-garde aesthetics and political commitment; the possible iterations of the concept of militant cinema; and the afterlives and political activation of the archival traces of past struggles.

BIOGRAPHY

Pablo La Parra Pérez is the director of the Filmoteca de Catalunya. Between 2018 and 2024, he served as a professor and Head of the Research Department at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola. He led the archive and research project Zinemaldia 70: All Possible Histories, which led to the preservation, research, and accessibility of the historical archive of the San Sebastian International Film Festival. He holds a Ph.D. from New York University, with a thesis entitled “Displaced Cinema: Militant Film Culture and Political Dissidence in Spain (1966-1982)”. His academic work has been published in international journals such as the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies, Alphaville, and Sociologias and volumes such as Cinemas of Global Solidarity (Oxford UP, 2026), Performing Memory: Corporeality, Visuality, and Mobility after 1968 (Berghahn Books, 2023), Global Perspectives on Amateur Film Histories and Cultures (Indiana UP, 2020), and 1968 and Global Cinema (Wayne State UP, 2018), among others.

Organised by Doc’s Kingdom in partnership with the Institute of Radical Imagination and Filmoteca de Catalunya, and part of the centenary program on Pere Portabella’s oeuvre, Acción Portabella.

As mensagens que nos chegam contradizem-se, as informações e as desinformações confundem-se. Na falta de condições para estudar e refletir, ficamos vulneráveis à solução mais fácil. Os slogans populistas que bombardeiam os nossos ouvidos são apelativos e fáceis de adotar quando decidimos à pressa, sem pensar de forma séria, informada e racional. As consequências são nefastas.

Como tantos outros, não aceito este destino de trevas. Quero que sejamos capazes de construir, coletivamente, reflexivamente, um futuro melhor, mais justo e equitativo. Tudo depende de nós, Cidadãos do Mundo.

A exposição Patologias fílmicas e outras dissidências, do realizador e pesquisador Lucas Camargo de Barros, encerrra com uma finissage no dia 14 de janeiro de 2026, a partir das 18h, na Galeria da Faculdade de Belas-Artes. A programação de encerramento inclui a exibição do longa-metragem O Tubérculo (70 min, Super8mm, 2024), correalizado por Barros e Zetune, às 20h, no Auditório Lagoa Henriques.

Aberta ao público de 10 a 14 de janeiro de 2026, a mostra propôs uma imersão nos processos criativos que atravessam a escrita, a montagem e a realização de O Tubérculo, expandindo o cinema para o espaço expositivo por meio de materiais, dispositivos e gestos que dão corpo às imagens, aos afetos e às fraturas narrativas do filme.

Com curadoria de Cátia Rodrigues e organização de Fabián Cevallos Vivar, a exposição parte de novas imagiologias para transformar a experiência fílmica em um campo sensorial, crítico e político. A tridimensionalidade desses gestos amplia a noção de coming back home, eixo central de O Tubérculo, deslocando o retorno à origem para um território instável entre memória, diagnóstico e invenção.

Rodado integralmente em Super8mm, na cidade natal do artista, O Tubérculo constrói-se como um caso clínico ficcional: acompanha o retorno de G. após a morte da avó, vítima de uma misteriosa doença chamada Insônia Familiar Fatal. Entre biografia, delírio e fabulação, o filme articula temporalidades dissociativas e contamina o próprio corpo da imagem, instaurando um cinema em que a doença não é apenas tema, mas força formal dissidente.

A exposição dialoga diretamente com a investigação teórico-prática desenvolvida por Barros em sua tese no programa de Artes Performáticas e Imagem em Movimento, sob orientação do Rogério Taveira e coorientação da Marta Mendes. Nesse percurso, o artista propõe o conceito de patologia fílmica: um modo de leitura e criação em que o filme incorpora sintomas, disfunções e instabilidades como estratégia de dissidência formal frente às narrativas e regimes hegemônicos de imagem.

Entre cinema expandido, pensamento crítico e fabulação estética, Patologias fílmicas e outras dissidências encerra-se convidando o público a atravessar um território onde corpo, imagem, diagnóstico e invenção se fundem. E onde a doença emerge como força poética, política e dissidente do próprio cinema.

03 > 19 DEZEMBRO 2025 I CISTERNA BELAS-ARTES

A 17ª edição do InShadow – Lisbon Screendance Festival percorre Lisboa com competições de vídeo-dança, documentário e animação, e inclui também performances, exposições, masterclasses e workshops.

Na FBAUL, o InShadow ocupa a cisterna com uma instalação de vídeo-dança de vários artistas, e a galeria com uma exposição de fotografia e vídeo da artista Andrea Hackl. Com inauguração a 3 de Dezembro, às 18h30, estas exposições podem ser visitadas até dia 19 de Dezembro.

No âmbito do InShadow Lisbon Screendance Festival inaugura no dia 3 de dezembro, às 18h30, na Cisterna da Faculdade de Belas-Artes uma exposição de vídeo-dança. A exposição ficará patente até 19 de dezembro.

Susana de Sousa Dias, Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, is the Guest of Honor at IDFA 2025, the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival, which takes place from November 13th to 23rd. IDFA is considered the largest and most prestigious international documentary film festival.

In recent editions, this distinction has been awarded to artists and filmmakers Hito Steyerl, Johan Grimonprez, Laura Poitras, and Wang Bing, and in previous years, to filmmakers such as Agnès Varda and Werner Herzog.

IDFA presents several films by Susana de Soua Dias, acclaimed filmmaker, curator, and academic. Known for her singular approach to archival images and cinematic form, her work interrogates dictatorship, colonial legacies, and the fragile terrain of memory.

Com a intenção de explorar o valor estético do nada, a sua capacidade e poder milagrosos de se criar a partir de si mesmo e de inspirar a criatividade autónoma nos outros, Nothing From Nothing (2025, 116 minutos) revela como o potencial milagroso de autocriação do nada, a que me refiro como a Décima Musa de Shakespeare ou Vontade do Nada, transforma a perda em descoberta, a morte em vida e o nada em muitos.

“Can you make no use of nothing, nuncle?” (King Lear 1.4) 

With the intention to explore the aesthetic value of nothing, its miraculous ability and power to create itself out of itself and to inspire autonomous creativity in others, Nothing From Nothing (2025, 116 minutes) reveals how nothing’s miraculous self-creating potential, what I refer to as Shakespeare’s Tenth Muse or Will to Nothing, turns loss to find, death to life, and none to many.

Juntamente com o Bobo da Corte de Lear, o público deste filme é convidado a perguntar: «qual é o valor de uso do nada?» Segundo os cientistas, o universo surgiu do nada. Será herético pensar que o nada veio do nada? Será que o nada, do qual se diz que todas as coisas evoluíram, pode ter emanado de si mesmo? Neste filme, a vontade autoral de Lear para o nada não só dá origem à peça e à sua multiplicidade de partes, como também destaca o objetivo final da poesia — a expansão infinita. 

Alongside Lear’s Fool, the audience of this film is invited to ask: ‘what is the use value of nothing?’ According to scientists, the universe emerged from nothing. Is it heretical to think that nothing came from nothing? Could the nothing out of which all things are said to evolve, have emanated from itself? In this film, Lear’s authorial will to nothing not only gives birth to the play and its multiplicity of parts, but also highlights the ultimate aim of poetry — infinite expansion. 

A maior parte da ação em Nothing From Nothing foi filmada numa cisterna medieval em Lisboa, sob a Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, onde sombras ameaçadoras, silêncios profundos e ecos comoventes criam uma atmosfera de mistério e intriga. A nossa adaptação inclui uma personagem que representa a sósia de Cordélia, interlúdios inesperados, um alfabeto inventado baseado nas personagens da peça e momentos-chave da ação, juntamente com breves excertos das peças e sonetos de Shakespeare, Don Sebastian, King of Portugal (1689), de John Dryden, Mensagem (1934), de Fernando Pessoa, e Orpheu Literary Quarterly Volumes 1 & 2 (1915/2022).

The majority of action in Nothing From Nothing was filmed in a medieval cistern in Lisbon, beneath the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Fine Arts, where looming shadows, profound silences and heart wrenching echoes create an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. Our adaptation includes a character understood to represent Cordelia’s Double, unexpected interludes, an invented alphabet based on the characters of the play and key moments in the action, along with brief extracts from Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets, John Dryden´s Don Sebastian, King of Portugal (1689), Fernando Pessoa´s Mensagem (1934), and Orpheu Literary Quarterly Volumes 1 & 2 (1915/2022).

Ao longo do processo de filmagem e edição deste projeto, o meu objetivo foi não só destacar o potencial milagroso de autocriação do nada, mas também a sua ligação à mão do artista como sujeito e ao valor estético da negritude, da invisibilidade, da ausência e do silêncio.

Throughout the process of filming and editing this project, my goal has been not only to highlight nothing’s miraculous self-creating potential, but its connection to the hand of the artist as subject, and how the aesthetic value of nothing is intimately related to the aesthetic value of blackness, invisibility, absence and silence.

Iniciei este projeto em julho de 2023 com o apoio heroico de atores e músicos talentosos e entusiastas, incluindo estudantes, professores de inglês aposentados, voluntários e atores profissionais de teatro.

I initiated this project in July 2023 with the heroic support of talented, enthusiastic actors and musicians (including students, retired English teachers, volunteers and professional theatre players). 

Ao refletir sobre a cegueira deliberada e a loucura do Rei Lear e de Dom Sebastião, a vontade de se entregar por completo — por nada, por toda a eternidade —, o significado radical do motivo do duplo nada é revelado em toda a sua plenitude. A subtil analogia entre os dois reis tem como objetivo destacar a imortalidade da autoria em função do seu público leitor. Mais importante ainda, retrata um rei que se esconde deliberadamente, ou seja, que sobrevive milagrosamente para sempre devido à sua ocultação deliberada.

Dwelling on the willful blindness and madness of King Lear and Don Sebastian, the will to give all of oneself away — for nothing, for all eternity, the radical significance of the double nothing motif is brought into full view. The subtle analogy between the two kings is meant to highlight the immortality of authorship on account of its readership. Most importantly, it portrays a King who goes into hiding willfully, that is, who miraculously survives forever on account of his willful hiddenness.

Join us for the screening and discussion of Scandar Copti’s “Happy Holidays“, which has premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, in presence of the filmmaker and the Israeli filmmaker Avi Mograbi.

About the film: Four interconnected characters share their unique realities, highlighting the complexities between genders, generations, and cultures. Rami, a Palestinian from Haifa, is dealing with his Jewish girlfriend’s sudden change of heart about her planned abortion. His mother, Hanan, is facing a financial crisis and becomes entangled in complications while seeking compensation for her daughter’s Fifi accident. Miri is forced to confront her daughter’s depression while also working to undermine her sister’s pregnancy with Rami. Fifi grapples with the guilt of hiding a secret that risks her family’s reputation and her burgeoning relationship with Dr. Walid.

Scandar Copti is a Palestinian filmmaker and visual artist from Yafa. Renowned for his unique approach to working with non-actors, he teaches this technique at NYU Abu Dhabi and internationally. His work draws on personal experiences and broader societal and political narratives, offering a nuanced perspective on the Palestinian minority in Israel. Copti’s debut feature film, “Ajami” co-directed with Yaron Shani, received the Camera d’Or Special Mention at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards. He is also the recipient of the Sutherland Trophy.

Israeli filmmaker and video artist Avi Mograbi was born in 1956 in Tel Aviv, where he lives and works to this day. Having studied art and philosophy, he gained his first production experiences working as an assistant director on commercials and feature films, while his own filmmaking career began in 1989. Since 1999, he has taught documentary and experimental film at Tel Aviv University and the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Mograbi, one of Israel’s most distinguished filmmakers, is known for his unwavering commitment to social, cultural and political justice in the Middle East, as well as his experimentalism and innovative contribution to cinematic language. Avi Mogrbi’s documentary films have been programmed by festivals worldwide, including: Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Rome, New York, FID Marseille, Vision du Reel and San Francisco, among others.
