The photographic archives of the 1930s — library exhibition
18/03 > 04/10/2021 | FBAUL LIBRARY
Organization: Céline Coturel and Joana souto Mateus | Coordination: Cristina Azevedo Tavares
The photographic archives of the 1930s bring you to the Faculty of Fine Arts of the university of Lisbon: photographs, glass negatives, slides and vintage postcards are on display in the library from March the 18th of 2021.
Why presenting images from the 1930s today? For decades, the Faculty’s archives preserved these images without ever being able to inventorize them. Now scanned, these archival holdings are available for consultation. These are the teaching materials of the time: slides of paintings from the 15th to the 20th century presented in class — including works from the Gulbenkian Museum; about thirty post card albums by the famous French publisher Nathan, about the History of Art in 1937; photographs of sculptures made by students and annotated by teachers; donations from students or visitors… And among them, about 450 photographs by the Portuguese artist Eduardo Portugal.
This artist was an ingenious photographer who, like Eugene Atget, immortalized hundreds of monuments in the largest cities in Portugal, focusing on details of Gothic architecture or religious sites, and scenes from everyday life. A moving exploration into the past and a unique artistic discovery.
