Legalization of foreign documents

If you have completed your degree/course abroad, and haven’t made any prior application for it’s registration, recognition or equivalence in Portugal, for the Mestrado application process it’s required the legalization of your degree certificate under the Portuguese legislation. Authentic documents issued in a foreign country are considered legalized in Portugal as long as the signature of the public servent who issued it is recognized by a portuguese diplomatic or consular officer in that country and authenticated with the respective consular stamp.

Alternatively, if the country in which you completed your degree has acceded to the Convention on the Abolition of the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Acts, concluded in The Hague on 5 October 1961, you can authenticate the certificate using the Hague Apostille Convention.

Certificates issued in member countries of the European Union do not require legalization.

If the documents are not in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, they must be translated into one of these languages by a translator recognized by the Portuguese diplomatic representation in the country where the document was issued. The following authorities can also carry out and certify translations: notaries; consulate in Portugal of the country where the document was issued and suitable translator; conservadores of any Conservatória; lawyers and solicitadores.

evaluation criteria and selection

In the process of selection there’s an overall assessment of your application, subject to a numerical scale of 0 to 20 values, in which the following criteria will be considered:

  1. Final rank of academic degree. In the case of academic degrees obtained in foreign higher education institutions (when the foreign higher education institution adopts a different scale from the Portuguese), the mark will be the result of the proportional conversion of the obtained grade to the Portuguese grading system;
  2. Academic, scientific, technical and artistic curriculum and / or portfolio.

Applicants will be ranked according to the score obtained in the evaluation, resulting from the simple arithmetic average of the classifications attributed to each of the selection criteria, and candidates who obtain a grade lower than 9.5 will be excluded from the selection procedure. The assessment parameters are described in Annex I to the Regulation of Graduate Studies of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

An interview can take place if the Course Coordinator considers necessary, in which case it will be included in the evaluation criteria indicated above. Candidates who do not attend the interview will be excluded from the selection procedure.

other information

on admission and enrolment conditions

Placement on the Master is only valid for enrolment and registration in the academic year to which the application relates.

Admitted applicants must enrol and register by the established deadline. When enrolling and registering, the registration fee and the first instalment of the tuition fee due to attend the course must be paid. In the case of international students, the first instalment corresponds to 30% of the total tuition fee.

The Academic Services can only issue any declaration of acceptance to students approved and admitted in the selection process, and this is conditional on payment of the amounts mentioned (registration fee and the first instalment of the tuition fee).

In the event of withdrawal, consult the information here, and the payment made for enrolment and registration will not be refunded, except in the situations provided for therein.

The opening and functioning of each course is subject to a minimum of 10 candidates registered and enrolled to that course.

Whenever a successful candidate fails to register and enrol by the deadline, the Faculty may admit the next candidate on the ranked list resulting from the application of the evaluation criteria, until the position is actually filled or there are no candidates for the competition in question.

For more detailed information, you can consult the Postgraduate Studies Regulations of the Faculdade de Belas Artes.

and information for international students

Students who enrol in higher education under the Statute of the International Student (Decree-Law no. 36/2014 of 10 March) maintain the status of international student until the end of the course in which enrol initially or to which change afterwards. Exceptions to this provision are applied to international students who acquire the nationality of an EU Member State. In this situation, the termination of the application of international student status as a result of the acquisition of the nationality of an EU Member State takes effect in the academic year following the date of acquisition of nationality.

Consult the Regulamento de Ingresso e Acesso para Estudantes Internacionais da Universidade de Lisboa.

Consult also the Universidade de Lisboa website, where you’ll find a comprehensive set of practical information (on accommodation, living costs, visas, etc.) for international students.
