/ Tuition fees
Tuition fee is the annual fee due by the student for the frequency in a course or degree.
The tuition fee for full-time students is set annually by the General Council of the Universidade de Lisboa, which may, under the International Student Statute, set differentiated values for international students.
The annual tuition fee to be paid by part-time students is set by the Faculdade de Belas-Artes’ Management Council, and corresponds to a proportionate value to that defined for the full-time general student.
The Management Council may authorize the payment of tuition fees in several instalments, defining the number of instalments, due dates and amounts.

matriculation and enrolment fees
All students enrolling for the first time on their respective course, regardless of the form of entry, are charged a matriculation fee, payable at the time of matriculation and enrolment.
Students renewing their enrolment will be charged a enrolment fee, payable when they renew their registration.
Both fees include the premium for the school insurance policy for the academic year in question.
Students that fulfil the following conditions are considered as international students:
- Being a national of a Member State of the European Union or a national of a State Party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area;
- Being a family member of a Portuguese national, a national of another Member State of the European Union or a national of a State Party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, regardless of their nationality;
- Not being a national of a Member State of the European Union, or of a State Party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, and not being covered by the previous number, have been legally resident in Portugal for more than two years, uninterruptedly, on January 1st of the year in which they intend to enter higher education, as well as their children who are legally resident with them, without prejudice to the time of residence with authorization to study in secondary education in Portugal;
- Being a beneficiary, on January 1st of the year in which they intends to enter higher education, of equal rights and duties status granted under an international treaty or agreement signed between the Portuguese State and the State of which they are a national;
- Having requested entry to higher education through the special access and entry to higher education schemes regulated in chapter II of Decree-Law no. 64-A/2023, of 31 January. º 64-A/2023, of July 31.
Foreign students who are attending the Faculdade as part of an international mobility program to carry out a part of a degree of a foreign higher education institution with which the Faculdade de Belas-Artes has established an exchange agreement with this objective, are not considered as international students.

Below you will find other relevant information, namely how scholarship students or those who have applied for a social action scholarship (through SAS – Serviços de Ação Social ULisboa) can pay their tuition fees, as well as the penalties for non-payment of tuition fees within the set deadlines. Regarding the attribution of scholarships or support, under the terms of article 10 of Decree-Law no. 36/2014, of 10 March, international students only benefit from indirect social action and are not eligible to apply for scholarships with the Serviços de Ação Social ULisboa.
Bellow you can also obtain detailed information on the procedures for requesting cancellation of enrolment and registration for all course units, as well as on switching to part-time study.
Tuition fees, as well as their payment schedule, also apply to students receiving grants from the Serviços de Ação Social ULisboa (SAS) and students who have applied for and are awaiting the award of a SAS grant. These students must pay their tuition fees as soon as they are notified of the decision on their application, under the following terms:
a) If the scholarship application is refused, students must pay the full amount of the tuition fees within ten working days of receiving notification of the rejection decision, or, within the same period, begin paying the tuition fees in instalments, paying the amount of the instalments already due on the date on which the instalment following the rejection decision is due, in accordance with the established schedule, and paying the remaining instalments on the dates set in the same terms. In these situations, no interest on arrears is due for instalments that are already due.
b) If the scholarship application is accepted, students must pay the full amount of the tuition fees within ten working days of receiving the first scholarship transfer, or, within the same period, begin paying the tuition fees in instalments, paying the amount of the instalments already due on the date on which the instalment following receipt of the transfer is due, in accordance with the established calendar, and paying the remaining instalments on the dates set in the same terms. In these situations, no interest on arrears is due for instalments that are already due.
Tuition fees can be paid in the following ways::
- Using the ATM references provided on the Fenix platform;
- By debit/credit card, using the Online Payments option in your ‘Current Account’ area on the Fenix platform..
- Students who fail to pay the instalments due within the specified period may pay the amount owed plus interest, in accordance with the applicable legal provisions.
- Interest is owed from the due date of each outstanding instalment.
- Until the outstanding tuition fees have been paid, students will be unable to obtain academic certification for the period to which the outstanding tuition fees refer.
- Failure to comply with the obligation to pay tuition fees is considered definitive when payment is not made by the end of the academic year to which it relates, except in situations where debt settlement plans have been established.
- Definitive non-compliance implies non-recognition of academic activities carried out during the period to which the obligation relates.
- Failure to pay outstanding tuition fees entitles the Faculdade, after notification in accordance with Article 13 of the University of Lisbon Tuition Fee Regulations, to request enforcement of payment from the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, through the tax enforcement procedure provided for in the Código de Procedimento e Processo Tributário.
Students must pay the instalments of tuition fees due on the date of the cancellation request, with the exception of the following, by deliberation and respective amendment by the Management Board of the Faculty of Fine Arts:
- Within 21 calendar days of the start of the respective academic year, under the terms of the academic calendar approved by order of the President of the Faculty of Fine Arts, or after enrolment and registration, when these acts are carried out at a later date, any student may request cancellation of enrolment in all curricular units for the current academic year, in which case they are entitled to a refund of the tuition fees paid.
- The right to a refund of the tuition fee, in the event that the cancellation is authorized under the terms of the previous paragraph, does not apply, in the academic year of entry, to students who have entered through the Concurso Nacional de Acesso, as well as to students who have entered through the special access and entry competition for international students.
- At the end of the period established in no. 1, the student is presumed to have attended the course, with the full provision of the teaching service by the Faculty, regardless of the degree to which the student has taken advantage of it, and any interested party has the right to request the cancellation of the registration in all the curricular units of the current academic year, until the last day of classes of the respective academic year, with the payment of the tuition fee instalments already due on the date of submission of the cancellation request.
The request, duly substantiated, is addressed to the President of the Faculty of Fine Arts. This request must be made exclusively through the Faculty of Fine Arts’ Fenix platform.
Acceptance of the request will result in the cancellation of the enrolment and the consequent loss of the link to the Faculty of Fine Arts and the University of Lisbon.
- To cancel your enrolment in all curricular units, you must access the Fenix system and log in with your Campus/Edu@ULisboa account details. If you have lost access to your Campus/Edu@ULisboa account, you can recover it here.
- Once you have accessed the application, select the ‘myFenix’ > ‘Services’ > ‘ Requisitions’ tab. Next, you should create your process, choosing the ‘Anulação da Inscrição na Totalidade das Unidades Curriculares’ process. After these steps, you must fill in the information requested in the electronic form.
- The application will only be submitted once you have clicked on ‘Submit’.
After cancelling their enrolment, undergraduate students may re-enrol and register for the course by submitting a re-entry application (pedido de reingresso). However, there must be a gap of one academic year between the academic year in which they withdrew and the academic year in which they wish to re-enter. If they wish to return in the academic year immediately following the cancellation, they must submit a new application through the available admission procedures.
Master’s and PhD students who have cancelled their enrolment and wish to return to the course must submit a new application within the deadlines established for this purpose.
A part-time student is defined as a student who, in a given academic year, chooses to attend part-time by enrolling in a reduced number of course units in a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programme, benefiting from a reduction in tuition fees and specific prescription rules.
In each academic year, the maximum number of credits that a part-time student may enrol in may not exceed half the number of credits that a full-time student is allowed to enrol in.
Thus, at the Faculty of Fine Arts, by decision of its Management Board, the conditions for part-time attendance, as well as the tuition fees due, are as follows:
- Students who, in the academic year in question, choose to attend courses that, in total, do not exceed 30 ECTS credits, in a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree programme, benefit from a reduction in tuition fees, paying 60% of the tuition fees payable by a full-time student for the same programme.
- Students enrolled in a bachelor’s degree course who, in the academic year in question, attend courses that, in total, do not exceed 15 ECTS credits, and who are in a position to complete their course in that academic year, benefit from an additional reduction in tuition fees, paying the equivalent of 30% of the tuition fees payable by a full-time student for the same course.
This scheme cannot be combined with any other benefits granted by the University of Lisbon with a view to reducing the tuition fees payable by the student.
Application for part-time enrolment under the general regime
Students with valid enrolment in a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree programme may apply for part-time enrolment.
Applications for this regime are made annually. Applications for part-time enrolment are made within the deadlines published in the Calendar of Academic Proceedings.
Applications must be submitted exclusively through the Faculty of Fine Arts’ online application system.

- To make your online application, you must access the Fenix system and authenticate with the data of your Campus@ULisboa account. If you have lost access to your Campus@ULisboa account, you can make the recovery here.
- After accessing the application, select the tab ‘MyFenix’ > ‘Services’ > ‘Requirements’. Next, create your application by choosing the option ‘Inscrição em Regime Geral a Tempo Parcial’. After these steps, fill in the information requested on the electronic form.
- The online application will only become valid after payment of the respective application fee, for which an ATM reference number will be provided. Payment can also be made by debit or credit card. If payment is not made by the specified date, the application will be cancelled.
- Errors or omissions made when completing the electronic application form or in the application process are the sole responsibility of the applicant.

A non-refundable fee of EUR 10 is payable for applying for part-time enrolment under the general regime.
The Academic Services will subsequently notify the applicant of the approval or refusal of part-time student status by email sent to the email address indicated as ‘Principal’ in the personal data form in Fenix.
Other specific conditions for part-time attendance
Special prescription regime
Part-time students benefit from a special prescription regime, whereby each enrolment in this regime is only counted as 0.5.
Important information for master’s and doctoral students
Master’s and doctoral students who renew their enrolment for an additional year in the final year of their course and who enrol only in the Dissertation/Thesis/Project Work course unit may not request to switch to part-time status when this course unit, when calculated over the two semesters of the academic year, is worth more than 30 ECTS credits.
Students in this situation may choose to attend and pay for only one semester of tuition fees, in which case they must submit their application for admission to Master’s/Doctoral exams by the end of the first academic semester. If they do not submit their final work by that date, they will be required to pay the annual tuition fees and may submit their thesis by the deadline set for the respective academic year.
