The talk will address key areas of Installation Art with visual examples selected internationally from the past decades. From its earlier inception as a practice of spatial location, it is suggested that Installation art’s success has led to a ubiquitous presence, and perhaps a splintering into different forms and concerns. In particular, the talk will focus on the return of sensation in Installation art through the presence of what we might term ‘atmosphere’. This also closely involves aspects of theatricality, staging, and thus, narrative possibilities. Finally, we will look at the idea of Installation art’s documentation, specifically through the example of de Oliveira/Oxley’s current exhibition ‘A Book of Burning Matches: Collecting Installation Art Documents’ at Thomas Olbricht Foundation, Berlin.

The talk will be in English, but the discussion afterwards is likely to be bilingual.
