3D PAD [Painting Atlas Damage]

E_2025_3d-PAD

The 3D PAD [Painting Atlas Damage] project aims to develop an open-access 3D catalogue of chromatic layer pathologies in easel paintings, integrating 3D digitization, scientific animations, and an online platform. This educational tool seeks to improve the understanding of degradation phenomena, overcoming the limitations of traditional atlases, which rely on 2D images and text, and targets students and professionals in conservation and restoration.

The methodology included the selection of pathologies based on student surveys, the 3D digitization and processing of damage model, the creation of explanatory scientific animations, and the development of a online repository. All the informations and results from the funded year, validated in academic context, are available on the project’s website.

Funded by FCT (ref. CEECINST/00112/2018/CP1530/CT0024) through CIEBA, the project stands out for its interdisciplinary approach, involving experts in cultural heritage documentation, 3D modeling, and conservation. It is a collaborative effort between the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon and the University of La Laguna (Tenerife, Spain).
