Encoding/decoding brings together projects from the 1st year of the Master in Communication Design (Belas-Artes, ULisboa) that explore the constant reformulation and reconversion of messages under the impact of the internet and computational infrastructures in contemporary culture.

The projects presented on this website highlight the current challenges of communication design practice, questioning canonical views of the discipline and its pedagogy. They highlight the infinite reproducibility and mutability of textual and visual content in the era of intelligent models of natural language processing and image generation. They contrast the potential of the Web for knowledge sharing with its volatility under the impact of social networks, while exposing the social bias and latent exclusion unintentionally incorporated into the design of digital interfaces and interactions. By creatively exploring the confluence of media, these projects reflect on how digital technologies shape our perception and experience of reality.
