ITI TALKS — Science communication – what’s in it for researchers?

Joana Lobo Antunes – “Science communication – what’s in it for researchers?”

Lunch will be provided after the talk for in-person atendees at both Lisbon and Funchal

“Science isn’t finished unless it is communicated”, as stated by Sir Mark Walport translates in a very simple way that doing research isn’t an end to itself. Until the knowledge created in the research units is translated into something meaningful for lay audiences it hasn’t yet fulfilled its purpose. However, researchers are already doing science and so many other related tasks, why should they also pitch in with communication activities? What’s in it for them and their work? We will discuss the benefits for researchers and also point out good practices in conveying complex science to non experts, and how to better interact with other stakeholders.

Bio: Joana Lobo Antunes is head of Communication at Instituto Superior Técnico and lecturer in Science Communication and Social Media for Scientists, at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She is coordinator of the science radio show 90 Segundos de Ciência (since 2017), the multimedia program Explica-me como se tivesse cinco anos (since 2020) and the science podcast 110 histórias | 110 Objetos (since 2021). Previously, Joana was Head of Communications at ITQB NOVA (2016-2019), former Director at Centro Ciência Viva de Sintra (2014-2016), and researcher in Promotion and Administration of Science and Technology (2012-2015). Additionally, she was founder and former President of Portuguese Science Communicators Network, known as SciComPT.
