Call for papers and works.
PARAGONE is organized by the Doctoral program in Performing Arts and the Moving Image (Lisbon University and Lisbon Polytechnic Institute). The Paragone Encounters seek to congregate and foster intersecting and multidisciplinary dialogues around theoretical thought and artistic practice in the form of conferences, debates, talks and exhibitions. The proposed topic for discussion in this first edition is the notion of gesture and its prevalence in the artistic field.
This call for papers encourages critical thought and/or practice around the possibilities encompassed by the notion of gesture, broadly defined. Philosophical reflections upon this concept, its political and cultural implications as well as its artistic manifestations, will provide e central axis around which the idea of gesture may be experienced, articulated and exhibited.
Call: Applications to participate in these Encounters may be done either through the submission of a text (paper) or an artistic project (work). The proposal must justify its pertinence with regard to the featured theme for the present edition (Gesture). All proposals must include personal CVs.
1) Call for papers: proposals of essays for public presentation. The texts must take Gesture as its primary topic, addressing its meanings and possibilities in the context of philosophical, political, social and artistic reflection. The texts should be around 3.000 words (adapted for 20 min. presentations), must include an abstract (around 150 words) clearly stating its relationship with the theme, as well as a personal CV.
2) Call for works: Artistic projects (film, performance, exhibition/installation, etc.) in different media addressing and problematizing the question of the gesture. The project’s proposal must be sent in digital format (text, image, video). This proposal should specify the work’s technical requirements and justify its relevance in relation to the conceptual and artistic nature of the topic of these Encounters. The organization is committed to ensure the best conditions for the exhibition of the works within the spaces made available by the collaborating institutions. However, the organization is unable to assume any expenses involved in the production of the works.
