16 > 29 JANUARY 2026 I FBAUL CISTERN

On January 16, at 5 p.m., Rafaela Nunes’ exhibition Seres-artefactos (Artifact Beings) will open at the Cisterna da Faculdade de Belas-Artes.

This event may be photographed and filmed and subsequently made public.

Hybrid entities emerge in the interstices between categories: neither entirely natural nor artificial, neither exclusively human nor machine. Seres-artefactos (Artifact-Beings) are speculations about these hybrids that cross binary boundaries and intertwine natural and artificial, human and non-human, beings and artefacts.

Rafaela Nunes uses a transmedia methodology that intertwines plastic languages such as painting and drawing with programming languages and artificial intelligence. In this poetics of feedback — where each medium informs and transforms the other — the untranslatability between different languages is explored through the instability of interpretation between human and machine.

The work on display invites reflection on the role of more-than-human agencies in artistic practice through co-creation with generative models, procedural programming, and the serendipity of the plastic arts themselves. This practice catalyzes an entanglement of languages and agencies to create hybrid entities that inhabit a speculative interstitial zone.

Seres-artefactos (Artifact-beings) function as speculative fictions about ambiguity and fluidity, offering a lens through which to reflect on the traditional categorisations under which we continue to organise reality. Inviting a post-humanist feminist perspective, it questions the ambivalent relationship with what it means to be ‘human,’ presenting multiplicity and mutability as intrinsic to the various possible forms of being.
