A Performance by Scúru Fitchádu
“Eu o Povo, (eu de novo)”
Experimental Field (Campo Experimental): Ângela Ferreira, in Collaboration with Alda Costa, explores material and environmental research undertaken in the early years of Mozambique’s independence. The exhibition takes its name from an outdoor agricultural learning laboratory maintained at Eduardo Mondlane University’s campus, where university staff, researchers and students worked together to produce food, design resources, tools and structures, and train farmers and community technicians. This experimental site was coordinated by TBARN (Técnicas Básicas de Aproveitamento de Recursos Naturais), a research group formed in the early years of the socialist government to improve farmers’ production and quality of life with minimal resources.
Ângela Ferreira builds on TBARN’s visual and textual remains to reveal the revolutionary ethos that made Mozambique a global centre for radical experimentation in the 1970s and early 1980s.
The exhibition expands on Ferreira’s research-based practice and its search for the contemporaneity of the past. Experimental Field emerges from the artist’s ongoing dialogue with Alda Costa, a pioneer Mozambican art historian and cultural worker whose lived experience during socialism and scholarship thereafter have made her living memory of an unmatched moment in cultural history. In the exhibition, historical objects from Costa’s milieu and personal collection are displayed alongside Ferreira’s work. These objects’ design reveals the period’s placement of material conditions at the forefront of cultural production. Through this dialogue, Ferreira’s works investigate histories that simultaneously express political pragmatism and creative playfulness, being locally grounded and international in their reach.
In the last quarter of 2024 the exhibition travels to Mozambique. This second iteration will take place at the Museu Nacional de Arte in Maputo.

A retrospective of the EMERGING project’s Think Tank
Apr 19 2024

On November 6th, 7th, and 8th, 2023, the EMERGING team publicly presented their work in progress regarding the systematization of artistic research conducted in Portugal within artistic higher education institutions and research centers. This event, in addition to serving as a dissemination activity, was also designed as a methodological tool for the project, as it allowed for refinement and updating of the research based on contributions received.
Drawing upon the situated knowledge of artistic, teaching, and research practices of team members in various university settings, data extracted from art theses with artistic practice components deposited in various Portuguese university repositories were presented. On the first day, the team met with consultants and received their feedback on the research project’s report. Consultants Maibritt Borgen from the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, Costanza Barbieri from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, and Sofia Marçal from the Museum of Natural History and Science also took the opportunity to present their work and engage in discussions aligned with the team’s research themes.
On the second day, researchers expanded the discussion of the work done and welcomed contributions from other academic peers in the social sciences and humanities, as well as representatives from the cultural and artistic sphere, such as mediators, educators, and curators. The final day was dedicated to the community of doctoral students, with a special focus on the transfer of knowledge from Portuguese artistic research and ways to preserve this legacy in the future. In this regard, one of the project’s outcomes was presented in broad strokes: the proposal for an academic research collection (arC), which will feature over 40 possible epistemic objects accessible through a digital platform still under construction.
emerging — Emerging and laying the foundations for a proposal of an academic artistic research collection
Apr 19 2024
The EMERGING project is currently underway in launching a proposal for the creation of a collection of academic artistic research, based on the selection of epistemic objects emanating from doctoral and post-doctoral theses conducted in Portugal. Epistemic objects are considered elements that not only correspond to the final work, but also, throughout the research process, underpin the path of the final proposal, add something lateral, or are situated between the thesis’s purpose and give rise to other artistic iterations. They can be artist books, graphic schemes, methods and methodologies, rhetoric, discourses and structures, final works, among others. The importance of these objects lies in their ability to provide transfer of artistic knowledge to academic peers and doctoral students, beyond the PDF document. At the same time, by aiming towards a digital university museum proposal, they pave the way for reception by other audiences interested in contemporary art. Currently, the team is in contact with the artists whose works have been selected and is arranging for the reservation of spaces for the pop-up exhibition that will circulate in some of the participating institutions in the project, including FBAUP, UÉvora, and FBAUL.

05 ABRIL > 16H30 I SALA 4.06

wandering bodies – noah alhalel exhibition
Apr 01 2024
09 > 14/04/2024 I CISTERNA BELAS-ARTES
Noah Thor Alhalel’s sculptural works embody tensions between oceanic ecologies, biological bodies, states of being, and material essences. In Alhalel’s solo show, Wandering Bodies, there’s a concrete connection between his hands, his sculptures, and the way he transmutes the diverse figurations of mollusk or crustacean husks from the shore, shaped by oceanic flows and evolutions, into works of art shaped again by his vision.
This poetic sculpture exhibition takes us on a journey into the surface of our acidifying oceans and to the deeps of our unconscious.
This is a result of the incredible journey the artist had within the past 2 years of VICARTE Master’s program through the research and development of different acidic solution applied on glazes and enamels as well as a practical work in ceramics with the use of Raku firings and other techniques like glass blowing.

O Mundo ao Contrário: Pinturas, Desenhos, Livros de Artista
Mar 18 2024
01 > 31 MARÇO 2024 I GALERIA FACULDADE BELAS-ARTES
No entanto, refletem realidades sociais e humanas.

EMERGENT MATTERS: a proposal for a collection of Art of the Higher Education Artistic Research in Portugal
Mar 17 2024
6th > 8th NOVEMBer 2023 I FBAUL
From November 6th to 8th, 2023, at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, the EMERGING team will convene to present and discuss the results of their study with members of the academic ecosystem and the broader artistic community.During this Think Tank, there will be two Keynote Lectures by the project consultants.
On November 6, 2023, at 5:00 PM, in the Lagoa Henriques Auditorium, Professor Dr. Costanza Barbieri (Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma) will present: The Research Turn: Workshops, Academies and the Artist’s Status from Renaissance to Modernity in which Barbieri asserts: “As an art historian, specialized in Renaissance and Baroque, I often deal with theAcademic and Research Turn (please forgive me this terminology) due to the change of status of the young artists, from the training in the workshop to the educational system of the Academies. I would like to show that a key factor in this process is artistic research and technological innovation, reshaping the scenario from the passive copy of the works of the master to the invention of new knowledge, often ratified by patents. In keeping with the experimental method that Leonardo first applied to artistic research, artists such as Ugo da Carpi, Sebastiano del Piombo and Parmigianino, developed new painting and printing techniques and, at the same time, looked for new support for painting on stone, marble or copper, competing with sculptors. Research and innovation, fundamental elements in the European educational evaluation system, are not yet recognized as foundational strategies in the approach to art, in line with all other disciplines. This aspect requires our attention as it provides an explanation even for the current gaps in many European countries’ regulations on PhDs”.
On November 7, also at 5:00 PM, in the Lagoa Henriques Auditorium, Professor Dr. Maibritt Borgen (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts) will present: Responding to conditions from within – fostering purposeful infrastructures for artistic research.
“Words may allow us to articulate and communicate the realizations that happen through material thinking, but as a mode of thought, material thinking involves a particular responsiveness to or conjunction with the intelligence of materials and processes in practice. Material thinking is the magic of handling.”
Prof. Barbara Bolt
Bringing into play the specific history, academic framework and administrative structure of the Ph.D in practice-based arts research in Denmark, this talk proposes to think about a practice-based PhD in arts research as responding to a set of conditions from within. If a PhD-project encapsulates an inert material thinking grounded in the particularities of the artistic practice, the embodied knowledge of the artist, and the interdisciplinary dialogue with other fields, how do we in response foster purposeful infrastructures for artistic research from within these conditions?
Both lectures can also be watched online via the zoom link:

Constanza Barbieri is a Professor of History of Modern Art and History of Design at the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome. She received his Ph.D. with scholarship from Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey, and an Italian doctorate from “Sapienza”, University of Rome. She is a specialist in Sebastiano del Piombo and has been involved in a broader sense with the Cinquecento, iconographic and iconological themes, as well as visual contexts in relation to the history of ideas. He has an extensive list of publications and has organized various exhibitions and conferences, including the “Michelangelo and Sebastiano del Piombo” exhibition in 2017.
Maibritt Borgen heads the Laboratory for Arts Research and is an associate professor of Art Theory at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art. Borgen holds a Ph.D. in art history from Yale University and is an alumni of the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York. Her research engages multiple entanglements of art and technology in the postwar period as well as the conditions for the production of knowledge (or awareness) through artistic research. She is currently at work on an article about the founding moments of digital life and its visual manifestations and heads the artistic research project Digital Materialities at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art. In 2023, she co-organized the Utrecht Summer School Supervising Artistic and Practice-based Research.
Since there have been theoretical-practical doctoral and post-doctoral programs in art in Portugal, many artists have been developing their work in an academic context. This activity has led to the formation of research communities that have greatly contributed to the advancement of knowledge in the field of fine arts, of which the project “Emergent matters: a proposal for a collection of art of the higher education artistic research in Portugal” is an excellent example. The consortium of public and private universities established by its research member has not only deepened our understanding of artistic research in the country but has also taken fundamental steps in the comprehension and study of contemporary art.
EMERGING is a pilot research project, funded by FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology), which draws upon the experiences of artists and university professors placed in strategic positions across various institutions of higher artistic education. The team comprises experienced mentors and researchers affiliated with R&D centers at the intersection of areas such as Drawing, Sculpture, Public Art, Painting, Dance, Performance, Multimedia, New Media, and Museology. The scholarship holder who is part of the project is its youngest member, holding a master’s degree in Sculpture, and actively collaborates in the study of art-based research, which is the primary focus of this project.
From November 6th to 8th, 2023, at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, the EMERGING team will convene to present and discuss the results of their study with members of the academic ecosystem and the broader artistic community. Over three days, we will introduce the work that systematizes the artistic research produced in Portuguese universities between 2009 and 2022, which is at the origin of the university art collection arC - artistic research collection.

o fra(g)me(nto) nómada — Iteração ll – workshop do projeto CAPHE
Mar 10 2024
21 MARÇO 2024 > 14H30-17H00 I SALA / LABORATÓRIO 2.31

Mundo Novo & Natura Naturans
Feb 27 2024
06 FEVEREIRO > 2 MARÇO 2024 I SOCIEDADE NACIONAL DE BELAS ARTES
Horário: 2ª a sábado – 12h00/19h00, exceto feriados.
Feb 19 20248 > 27 FEBRUARY | GALLERY FACULDADE DE BELAS-ARTES
The exhibition Entre Vagos, curated by Diana Mordido Aires, opens on 8 February at 5 pm.
“This exhibition traces proximities between a body of artists who, in one way or another, have had a dialogue with the concept of shadow during their residency at Cultivamos Cultura. For this reason, “Entre Vagos” [Spare In-betweens] is an exhibition about shadows: distorted blurs that cling to our extremities, gathering and reminding us of all the surfaces they’ve stretched across to carve out our outlines. Or about the voids between them, always with a certain lack of clarity and precision. Through different perspectives, we are invited to explore our own limitations between reality and illusion; presence and absence; opaque and lucid; sheets and dreams; trails and tracks; borders and decals; sensitising and exposing. This sum of dichotomies becomes relevant when absence asserts itself through a fleeting presence. Or when a gesture is fleetingly delimited. Or in a discussion between shadow and void.” — Diana Mordido Aires
Shadows remember everything we once were, while reducing us to the essential. They constantly surrender themselves to the voids, free to renounce the light and create empty spaces for what matters.
SOUNDABLA BODIES CAN BE SPECULATED
Feb 18 20248TH > 29TH FEBRUARY 2024 I CAMÕES LIBRARY
Cay has been intimated related to sound ever since. The stir of a spoon in an earthenware mug. A whistle that blows around the corner. An acoustic tile room in a church. A plate that hits the ground. Our primary concern, as professors of the Ceramics Studio of the master’s in Sciences and Arts of Glass and Ceramics, a partnership of FCT-UNOVA with Faculty of Fine Arts of ULisbon and VICARTE, is to stimulate the capacity of playing with clay in a creative manner and understanding the matter’s feedback while working tridimensional speculation. For so, this exhibition is the result of a speculative and experimental workshop aiming to interweave clay and sound through both visible/not visible tridimensional spaces, thus rendering multissensorial experiences through these material bodies of ceramic sculpture. The event program joined the invited researchers Naya Castillo and Hans Rutz from the Spatial Design Lab of Technical University of Graz and Helena Elias and Marta Castelo, both professors at the department of Sculpture of the FBAUL.
The presence of different composed clay bodies in various shapes, with interior spaces that are not immediately visible, may be rendered through the materiality of sound enacted by the participant. Feedback is a term used in the field of music and may also stand for reverberating clay matters in ceramics. It also may signify a process through which we obtain an opinion, information, and response to what is addressed or a modification or control of a process or system by its effects. At the same time, the space that hosts the exhibition and the materiality in it also modulates the possible combinations of interaction occurring with the participants and the installations and sculptures. The event also decenters vision as principal constructor of visuality. Vibrant matters on their way, for sure!

In most contexts, revolution implies a circular or cyclical change around a central idea, concept, or system. It often suggests a departure from the existing order and the emergence of something new and transformative. The term “revolution” is versatile, and its interpretation depends on the specific domain or context in which it is used.
In physics, a revolution can describe the circular motion of an object around a central point. In the realm of technology and innovation, a revolution can signify a significant and often radical change or advancement in a particular field. In the context of social and political movements, a revolution involves a profound and often rapid change in the structure or organization of a society, government, or system. Economic revolutions involve transformative changes in economic systems and structures.
Thomas Kuhn introduced the concept of “paradigm shift” to describe major changes in scientific thought. Scientific revolutions occur when there’s a fundamental shift in the understanding of the natural world, leading to the adoption of new theories and methodologies. Cultural revolutions involve significant changes in the cultural and artistic expressions of a society.
In this year’s Summer School, we will focus and reflect on the context and how it may promote, hinder, or just generally Induce transformation: a “RE(volution)”. It is the year that we celebrate, in Portugal, the 50th anniversary of our political revolution against a totalitarian regime. While we will not focus on politics we will try to understand and explore all the revolutions taking place at many scales within our natural environment. How can they expand our horizons, challenge our perception, transform our perspective, and make us reflect on our actions? Allowing the creation of new and meaningful artworks relevant to our own revolutions.
The intersection of Art, Biology, and the Environment offers unique opportunities to visual artists. This innovative summer course, which is already on its eleventh edition, will allow non-specialists to acquire theoretical and practical skills in biological and environmental sciences in connection to the visual arts.
The Summer School explores the interdisciplinary relationship between art, life and environmental sciences through hands-on exercises, combining theory and practice in an informal environment, e.g.: seminars, debates, visits, and the creation of artworks with biological media. The activities in the Summer School at Cultivamos Cultura will address issues such as the cultural representations of technology and science, ethical concerns and the evolution of bioart as a cultural phenomenon. One week program with the opportunity to extend the stay for one or two additional weeks to develop an art project in a collaborative environment.
The practical component will focus on hands-on exercises in the laboratory, workshops, and within the natural environment. The possibility of transforming abstract concepts into art objects, the collection and selection of organisms for artistic purposes will be highlighted, and, finally, visits to different parts of the natural park, will take place.
The course will leave plenty of room for informal activities and a cultural and social program.
The cost will be 800€ for the first week and 650€ for the optional 2 weeks after. The price includes shared accommodation at Cultivamos Cultura (a farmhouse), meals, tuition, and general consumables for the course; from 1th July to 5th July for the first week, 8-12 July for the second week, and 15-19 July for the third week (weekends are included between course weeks and will be dedicated to socializing and leisure activities).

Sobre a conferência International Conference “Social Arts and Collaboration”

Jan 25 2024Historiography of Portuguese Art and Architectural history in the XIX and XX century
Jan 22 2024
22nd > 23rd JANuary 2024 I CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN FOUNDATION
Investigating the origins of the history of art and architecture in Portugal and on Portugal, this conference focuses and reconstructs the different narratives of the history of art and architecture of Portugal – a country understood here as an artistic, physical, political and cultural geography- built in the 19th and 20th centuries, from which emerged the study, protection and research institutes currently active at a national and international level.
The result of the scientific collaboration between the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Universidade Nova of Lisbon, the Universidade de Lisboa, the Facultade de Belas Artes and the Gulbenkian Foundation, the conference corresponds to the second scientific meeting of a broader research project on history and historiography of Iberian art entitled Iberian Art and Architecture: Art and Architectural History in the Iberian Peninsula, conceived, coordinated and directed by Helena Pérez Gallardo (Universidad Complutense Madrid), Sabina de Cavi (Universidade Nova Lisboa) and Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann (Princeton University), financed by the Spanish project (I+D PID2021-125494NB-I00), financed by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación of Spain (I+D PID2021-125494NB-I00), in the years 2022-2025. The Portuguese meeting, which will take place in the Auditorium 3 of the Gulbenkian Foundation, which participates as a collaborating institution together with the IHA (Universidade Nova, Lisboa), ARTIS (Universidade de Lisboa), CIEBA (Facultade de Belas Artes Universidade de Lisboa) and the FRIA research group (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), has been organized by an exceptional scientific committee (Professors Vitor Serrao, Fernando Antonio Baptista Pereira, Maria João Neto, Sabina de Cavi, Helena Pérez Gallardo), and counts with the presence of Prof. Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann (Princeton University, USA) as keynote speaker and respondent.
